  • After the procedure, the dentist will let the patient bite down a cotton gauze for 30 minutes. By applying pressure on the site, bleeding can be stopped, and the blood clot can form.
  • As much as possible, patients are restricted to spit since doing so can lead to more bleeding.
  • With the gauze on, patients should refrain from talking since it can cause an unbalanced application of pressure, which leads to the delay of blood clot formation.
  • After 30 minutes, patients can remove the gauze and start consuming cold substances to help minimize blood flow out of the extraction site. Make sure not to use a drinking straw for the sucking motion can cause the blood clot to dislodge. Placing a cold compress against the site would work as well.
  • Following the procedure, patients are advised only to consume soft foods to avoid damaging or dislodging the blood clot and to prevent unnecessary pain as well.
  • After 24 hours, patients are instructed to rinse with warm water and salt solution to get rid of any foods stuck in the mouth.
  • Patients should take medications as prescribed by the dentist, and any irregularities spotted should be reported so that immediate actions can be performed.
  • Avoid any physical activities that can cause one’s blood pressure to increase.
  • If the extraction site continues to bleed, bite down a cotton gauze and address the issue to the dentist.
  • Patients should continue with their oral health care a day following the procedure. But as much as possible they should try to be careful and gentle near the site.
